Gaia in the Desert

I just got back from Burning Man, and the above is what I shared with the insane weirdos that inhabit that god forsaken, sun baked, and wind ravaged piece of earth. The theme of the festival was evolution. My take on that was to mimic the evolution of poster layering as seen on our city streets. I also meant Gaia to be holding a pictorial representation of evolution in each one of her hands. Unfortunately, booze, the sun, and shiny things all worked to distract me from completing the piece. I brought it home with me though, so sometime soon it'll make another appearance in a new incarnation.

Caterpillar Carnage

Two anonymous Montreal members of the group finally poked in their little heads on us in Toronto. They got us so excited, we moistened our panties, then took up some rollers and painted a large catepillar on this enormous billboard advertisement for a cashmoney bank. The caterpillar then scrambled for the nearby leafy valley and disappeared forever. Or has it?

Christie Garbage Pits

Buenos Aires

When I was living in Buenos Aires, at least once a week there would be garbage strikes, noticeable by heaping piles of garbage on all the street corners. If the garbage sits for any period of time it get ravaged by the thousands of poor people in the city and scatters all over the place. An agreement must always be reached super fast though, because the garbage is always cleaned up later that day or the next morning. By contrast, it was very interesting to see how a developed country dealt with a similar problem. If you were to transport the Toronto garbage strike to Buenos Aires, it would probably be the neatest, cleanest thing in the city. It was crazy that Christie pits was chosen as a garbage deposit site because it's pretty much down town. It was so incredibly contained and so comparably hygienic; it didn't even smell that bad. Apparently they sprayed Lysol all over the rink every afternoon. I may be desensitized from traveling around developing countries so much, but I swear, if it wasn't for seeing Christie Pits, I don't think I would have registered that there was a garbage strike in Toronto.

I like how you can see the yellow city of Toronto tape.

A flattened dessicated mouse to add to my dessicated animal collection!

These saussage things apparently are to soak up the garbage juice.

The least sanitary thing they probably did was leave that net in there.

''Weather permitting this rink will open on Dec 8''
I think the weather is the last thing they should be worrying about.

Camouflaged Toxic Cement Trees

So a bunch of us efterblivets over here went treeplanting this summer. We ended up with a coupla trees in our bags after the planting season. In general we thought the little monoculture trees we planted were unnatural mutants and the forest we were planting was not akin to the one being cut down and replaced. We figured we'd make it into a little project on the streets of Vancouver.

Suffocating Dollies

When I was little my mom told me to never put plastic bags on my head or I would die. Consequently, these Prince George Value Village dolls kinda awesomely creeped me out. Definitely would have given me mixed messages. Plus look at how funny they are sitting on each other naked.

Tidal Failure

Upon our reunion with ''el holy'' and consequent invasion of his apartment in Vancouver we attempted our first efterblivet/el holy collaboration piece...and failed miserably with wet feet. The idea was to work with tag graffiti by blocking some of it out into a simple shape. It ended up being a long and complicated process with multiple nights, and ultimate failure due to improper planning. The first day we scouted out a spot on the Vancouver waterfront, we picked a spot that an artist named Steep had graffitied. We hypothesize that he is a 14 year old boy with a shakey hand and low self confidence. The first night we walked around with a huge 10 gallon bucket of house paint and whited out the wall. The second night we painted with black acrylic some details and tried blocking out the graffiti into the cockroach shadow we had in mind, but had to abort mission when the tide rose so high that the paint was getting washed away as fast as we were putting it on.

White out.

Poor little Steep's reaction to us whiting out his work.

Advanced tide avoidence paiting techniques.

The mural was abandoned because efterblivet was leaving town and el holy didn't have the heart to finish it alone. No ''final'' picture was taken.

Caution: Caped Deer

On April 31st a dream three years in the making was finally realized upon the reunion of efterblivet, on an epic road trip, on the way to tree planting camp, in the infamous converted plymouth van. It can be seen somewhere between Vancouver and 70 Mile House, BC, right after a tunnel.

Stay tuned for the video and improved versions on your local remote highways to nowhere.
